Parental mental health research survey launch – support Samaritans Cymru

Samaritans Cymru is a suicide prevention charity that provides emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope. In 2024, we are launching a new project to raise awareness about the impact that the journey to becoming a parent can have on your mental health. We want to improve the support available to men and women across Wales. We also want to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health and the parenthood journey.

This project aims to improve the support available to anyone on the parenthood journey and includes the perinatal period, infertility, baby-loss, adoption, donor-conception, and postpartum.

To achieve this, we would like to find out more about people’s experiences of the parenthood journey, how it affected their mental health, and what – if any – support they had during this time.

We would love to hear from anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • You are over 18
  • You live in Wales
  • You have tried to get pregnant, experienced baby loss, been pregnant, tried to adopt, experienced infertility or undergone fertility treatments (such as egg donation) had a baby, and/or have been a new parent in the last 10 years (either you or your partner)
  • You struggled with your mental health at the time

You will be asked questions about becoming or trying to become a parent, your mental health, and the support you had. It should take no more than 15 minutes to complete and the closing date for the survey is Monday 4th March 2024.

Complete the survey here

To request this survey as a hard copy, please email e.gooding@samaritans.org

Answers will be held confidentially and anonymously. The information that is gathered will be used to develop a policy report to influence change in Wales and a free resource to support anyone on the parenthood journey in Wales.

Your response will help us call for improved support for anyone on the parenthood journey in Wales. Your time and support will help others and help us understand what needs to change in Wales.

Thank you for your time.
