Every year, Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae Day takes place on the 15th October and encourages everyone to give Welsh a go; no matter their proficiency in the language.
Despite the common misconception that learning welsh at a young age or in school is the only way to become fluent, it is possible to learn Welsh at any age- and it’s easier than you may think.
Rhys Benjamin, a Mental Health In-Reach Worker in Schools for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, didn’t begin his Welsh Language journey until he was 18 years old, where living with a fluent Welsh speaker spurred him on to give it a go himself.
Since then, he’s taken as many opportunities as possible to practice his Welsh skills and recently took part in a course to boost his confidence, which he says taught him that he doesn’t have to use perfect Welsh to be considered a Welsh speaker.
Rhys explains more in this video:
Da iawn Rhys, rwyt ti’n ysbrydoliaeth!
